The Vikrant-class aircraft carriers represent one of the most significant milestones in India’s indigenous defense industry. The first ship of the class, INS Vikrant (IAC-1), holds the distinction of being India’s first domestically built aircraft carrier.
- Design and Construction: Developed in line with the Indian Navy’s requirements, the ship was designed by the Navy’s Design Bureau and constructed at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
- Dimensions: The carrier measures approximately 262 meters in length, 62 meters in beam, and displaces around 45,000 tons.
- Air Wing: Vikrant operates on a STOBAR system (Short Take-Off but Arrested Recovery). It is capable of deploying MiG-29K fighter jets, along with helicopters such as the HAL Dhruv, Kamov Ka-31, and MH-60R.

- Crew Capacity: The carrier accommodates around 1,600 personnel.
- Defensive Systems: Equipped with Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, AK-630 close-in weapon systems (CIWS), and advanced radar/electronic warfare systems for protection.
- Operational Capability: It can carry and operate around 30–35 aircraft.
- Commissioning: INS Vikrant officially entered service with the Indian Navy in 2022.
With the Vikrant-class, India not only boosts its naval capabilities but also aims to counterbalance China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean. The project stands as a flagship achievement of the country’s “Make in India” defense initiative.
