Denmark Receives First Patria 6×6 Armored Vehicles for Modernization Drive

Denmark has officially received its first two Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers, delivered to Almegårds Barracks on the island of Bornholm, according to a statement by the Ministry of Defence. This milestone marks the beginning of Denmark’s deployment of 129 vehicles ordered from Finland under the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) framework. The full-scale rollout of these units is set to accelerate in 2026.

Designated XA-300 in Danish service, the Patria 6×6 will serve a wide range of operational functions, including troop transport, battlefield command, secure communications, electronic warfare, and medical evacuation. The introduction of these vehicles is expected to significantly enhance the mobility and protection of Danish ground forces.

Denmark officially joined the CAVS initiative in July 2025, signing key agreements on research and development, framework cooperation, and life-cycle management. The acquisition, valued at around 1.9 billion Danish kroner (€247 million), is financed by the government’s Accelerationsfonden. The CAVS program, launched in 2019 and led by Finland, also includes Latvia, Sweden, and Germany, while remaining open to other European nations.

In preparation for deployment, seven Danish Army driving instructors underwent training at Patria’s facility in Hämeenlinna, Finland. One of them, callsign “Kilo” from the Bornholm Regiment, highlighted the vehicle’s off-road capabilities, noting its strong performance and straightforward operation. Next in line are maintenance instructors who will oversee long-term support and repair.

Unveiled in 2018, the Patria 6×6 is a cost-effective and modular combat vehicle offering a balance of protection, mobility, and adaptability. Powered by a Scania DC09 diesel engine delivering 294 kW, it achieves speeds of over 100 km/h on roads, 8 km/h in water, and has a range of up to 700 kilometers. It accommodates a crew of two or three plus ten fully equipped soldiers, supporting extended missions of up to 72 hours.

The vehicle’s protection levels comply with NATO’s STANAG 4569 standards, with options for enhanced ballistic and mine resistance. It can be armed with various weapon systems, including heavy machine guns, 25–30 mm automatic cannons, or the Patria NEMO 120 mm mortar. Its modular design allows integration into both light and heavy Danish Army units.

The CAVS program also emphasizes industrial collaboration, with Latvia already producing Patria units domestically and Germany cooperating with DSL, FFG, and JWT. Denmark is expected to pursue similar initiatives to strengthen its defense industry.

To date, more than 850 Patria 6×6 units have been ordered through CAVS, with over 200 delivered. Sweden alone has procured 341 under the name “Pansarterrängbil 300,” while Ukraine has received 42 from Latvian stockpiles. Germany, meanwhile, has initiated procurement for up to 1,000 vehicles in the coming years.
