The Yasen-class, developed by Malakhit Design Bureau in St. Petersburg and constructed at the Sevmash shipyard, represents Russia’s fourth-generation, multirole nuclear-powered attack submarine. The lead vessel, Severodvinsk, required 17 years of construction and was launched in June 2010.
These submarines are designed for long-range strike and multipurpose operations. They can deploy cruise missiles up to 5,000 km (3,100 miles) with conventional or nuclear warheads and are capable of engaging submarines, surface vessels, and land targets. Each submarine carries 24 cruise missiles and eight torpedo launchers, in addition to mines and anti-ship missiles.
The second vessel, Kazan, is under construction, and a third submarine began building by the end of 2011. The Russian Navy plans to operate up to ten Yasen-class submarines to gradually replace the aging Oscar and Akula-class fleets.
