From KAAN to Iron Dome: Foreign Journalists Tour Turkish Defense Industry

Breaking Defense, a leading American defense media outlet, reported observations following a comprehensive press tour of major Turkish defense companies.

TUSAŞ and the KAAN Project

In Ankara, journalists toured TUSAŞ facilities under tight security, viewing the production line of the fifth-generation stealth fighter KAAN. The production process, involving the integration of eight modules, was described as the “world’s first vertical assembly line.” Three prototypes were displayed, with test flights scheduled through May 2026.

Roketsan and Iron Dome

The tour included a visit to Roketsan, a key player in Turkey’s Iron Dome layered missile defense project. CEO Murat İkinci emphasized that the company produces missiles for both domestic and international clients: “We currently export to over 40 countries.” Roketsan manufactures a range of short- to long-range missiles and micro-munitions compatible with drones. The Tayfun 4 ballistic missile, unveiled in July, is expected to enter serial production in 2026.

ASELSAN and Air Defense Systems

ASELSAN showcased vehicle-mounted systems that will integrate into Turkey’s air defense network. Long-range SİPER, medium-range HİSAR, and very short-range KORKUT systems were presented. CEO Ahmet Akyol highlighted, “All missile defense systems were fully designed, developed, and delivered by ASELSAN.” Work continues on AI-enabled early-warning radars and UAV-compatible solutions.

Bayraktar TB3 and KIZILELMA

At TEKNOFEST Mavi Vatan in Istanbul, Baykar representatives confirmed KIZILELMA unmanned fighter jets are in low-rate initial production, with first deliveries expected next year. Bayraktar TB3 will enter service on the TCG Anadolu in September 2025.

Exports and International Cooperation

Exports are a strategic priority for Turkish defense firms. Roketsan and Baykar highlighted cooperation opportunities with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other Gulf countries. Baykar signed a $3 billion deal for Akıncı UAVs with Saudi Arabia, marking its largest export to date. ASELSAN noted that NATO-compatible technologies open potential sales to alliance members. TUSAŞ also signed an agreement to export 48 KAAN fighter jets to Indonesia.
