Finland has taken a major step to enhance its air combat capabilities. On September 10, 2025, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced the potential sale of 405 AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) and associated support equipment to Finland, with an estimated value of up to $1.07 billion.
This acquisition positions Finland among the few European nations cleared to receive the latest export version of the AMRAAM. The AIM-120D-3 will significantly boost Finland’s beyond-visual-range (BVR) engagement capacity, especially as its air force transitions from F/A-18 Hornets to F-35A Lightning II fighters.
The package includes not just missiles, but also guidance sections, control units, containers, test and reprogramming equipment, spare parts, training gear, software, transport support, and technical assistance. DSCA stressed that the deal will not alter the regional military balance or require U.S. personnel deployment in Finland. RTX Corporation will act as the principal contractor.
The Finnish Air Force plans to integrate the AIM-120D-3 into its future fleet of 64 F-35A Lightning II jets, with the first deliveries expected before the end of 2025 and full operational capability targeted by 2030.
The AIM-120D-3 is the most advanced AMRAAM variant currently available for export. It features a GPS-aided inertial navigation system, a two-way datalink, in-flight retargeting, and third-party cueing capability. Its effective range is estimated between 160–180 km, it can withstand up to 40G maneuvers, and it can reach speeds up to Mach 4. Its “home-on-jam” mode allows it to engage electronic jammers, ensuring resilience in contested electromagnetic environments.
Finland also intends to procure AGM-158B JASSM-ER long-range cruise missiles and AGM-88G AARGM-ER anti-radiation missiles to further diversify its strike and suppression capabilities.
