New German GMARS Rocket Launcher Doubles Firepower Compared to U.S. HIMARS

Germany’s new GMARS rocket launcher has been revealed, offering a clear step up from the U.S. HIMARS family. By mounting twin missile pods on a single vehicle, GMARS effectively doubles salvo capacity and is being developed with an eye toward future cruise-missile capability for deep-strike missions.

Unlike the U.S. M142 HIMARS — which carries a single pod (six rockets) or one ATACMS — GMARS installs two pods on the launcher. That equates to 12 rockets or two ATACMS on one chassis, immediately increasing fired volume and target engagement potential per vehicle.

The upgrade isn’t only about ammunition count. Mobility and payload carriage are improved by using a larger 8×8 chassis instead of a 6×6 truck. The heavier, more robust platform supports the dual-pod load and generally offers superior off-road performance, an advantage in dispersed, mobile operations.

A notable future enhancement is planned cruise-missile launch capability. Although not yet operational, the upgrade is slated for around 2027; if implemented, GMARS would gain deep-strike reach well beyond the standard HIMARS envelope, expanding its tactical and operational roles.
