The World’s Largest Space Congress Kicks Off in Sydney

The world’s most prestigious space event, the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2025), opened its doors in Sydney, Australia, from September 29 to October 3, 2025. This year’s congress is held under the theme “Sustainable Space: Resilient Earth” and brings together around 7,000 delegates from more than 90 countries.

About the Event

The congress is taking place at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour, Sydney, hosted by the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA), the Australian Space Agency, and the New South Wales Government, and organized by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). Leading space agencies such as NASA, ESA, and JAXA, along with academics, engineers, and entrepreneurs, are participating in the event.

Strong Representation from Turkey

Turkey is represented extensively at the congress. A delegation from the Turkish Space Agency, the Ministry of Industry and Technology, TÜBİTAK, and several universities is participating at the Turkey Pavilion. Turkish scientists and students are presenting research and contributing to scientific discussions. Turkey’s Ambassador to Canberra, Ufuk Gezer, emphasized in a statement that the event highlights Turkey’s progress in the space sector and provides opportunities for international collaboration.

Highlights of the Event

Throughout the congress, participants have the opportunity to meet astronauts and hear about their experiences. For instance, Australia’s first female astronaut, Katherine Bennell-Pegg, climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge before the event to inspire young people to explore space.

Additionally, a “Public Day” will be held on October 3, giving space enthusiasts the chance to meet astronauts and experience interactive activities. On September 30, a special session on the “Space Elevator” will feature presentations by Dr. Yoji Ishikawa and Dr. Peter Swan about this futuristic technology.

Turkey’s active participation in the event showcases the country’s scientific and technological advancements in space on an international platform. The congress is considered an important forum for strengthening global collaboration in the space sector.
