South Korea Secures $34M U.S. Maverick Missile Deal to Strengthen Deterrence

The U.S. State Department has approved the sale of AGM-65G2 Maverick tactical missiles to South Korea in a package valued at $34 million. According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the deal covers 44 missiles along with engineering and logistics support. The move underscores Washington’s commitment to reinforcing Seoul’s defenses amid rising Indo-Pacific security tensions.

The Maverick, a combat-proven precision strike weapon, is designed to target armored vehicles, fortified bunkers, and naval assets. Its infrared guidance allows day and night operations in all weather conditions, offering pilots greater flexibility in contested environments. For South Korea, the missiles can be fielded immediately from its existing fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons and F-15K Slam Eagles, ensuring an instant boost in operational readiness.

With a combat record spanning over five decades—from Vietnam to the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan—the Maverick remains a trusted and affordable weapon system. While newer missiles like the JASSM offer extended range, the Maverick’s cost-effectiveness, versatility, and rapid deployability make it a practical addition to Seoul’s layered strike capability.

Beyond capability, the sale carries strategic weight. It strengthens deterrence against North Korea’s armored forces and missile arsenal, while also signaling enduring U.S.-ROK defense ties at a time of increased Chinese assertiveness and Russian outreach in Asia. RTX Corporation will serve as the prime contractor for the program.

Though modest in dollar value compared to major arms deals, the Maverick package highlights a key point: not every critical defense acquisition needs to be worth billions. For South Korea, the agreement delivers an immediately deployable, proven system that directly addresses today’s threats, reinforcing both military strength and alliance credibility.
