Russia is steadily reinforcing its Su-34 strike aircraft fleet. A new batch of Su-34 fighter-bombers has been delivered to the Russian Aerospace Forces by United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). This move underscores Moscow’s determination to maintain frontline airpower and compensate for losses amid ongoing operations in Ukraine.
Su-34: Versatile Strike Aircraft
The Su-34 “Fullback” is a long-range, twin-seat fighter-bomber. Equipped with modern radar and electronic warfare systems, it can carry up to eight tons of ordnance, including precision-guided missiles and glide bombs. Its combination of range, survivability, and multi-role capability makes it effective for both tactical and strategic missions.
The modern Su-34M features upgraded avionics, mission computers, and Khibiny electronic countermeasure systems. It typically carries a 30 mm GSh-30-1 cannon and up to 12 hardpoints for various munitions. FAB-series bombs with UMPK wing kits offer a low-cost standoff capability, reshaping Russia’s strike profiles over Ukraine.
Production and Operational Use
UAC and Rostec officials confirm stable output at the Chkalov plant in Novosibirsk. The Su-34 often operates alongside Su-35S escorts, which provide air dominance and long-range target detection, allowing Su-34 crews to focus on precision strikes against air defenses and logistic nodes.
Recent deployment of UMPK-equipped FAB-500 and FAB-1500 bombs from medium altitude extends standoff ranges while minimizing exposure to short-range air defenses. This tactic enables Russia to pressure frontline urban areas and supply hubs without low-level penetration risk.
