Indonesia Confirms Acquisition of 42 Chinese J-10 Jets Amid U.S. F-15EX Uncertainty

Indonesia has confirmed plans to acquire 42 Chinese-built Chengdu J-10 fighter jets under its 2026 airpower modernization program. Negotiations over U.S. F-15EX purchases remain under review. The announcement was made in Jakarta on October 15, 2025, following technical evaluations and budget verification by the Ministry of Defense.

Aircraft Features and Technological Edge

The Chengdu J-10C, and its export variant J-10CE, is a 4.5-generation multirole fighter. Measuring approximately 16.9 meters in length and with a maximum takeoff weight of 19 tons, it is powered by a single AL-31FN or WS-10B Taihang turbofan engine capable of reaching Mach 1.8. The AESA radar detects targets up to 200 km and the aircraft has 11 external hardpoints for air-to-air missiles, precision-guided bombs, and electronic warfare pods. Its delta-wing and canard configuration allow high maneuverability.

Indonesian Air Force Inventory and Diversity

The acquisition adds a new dimension to Indonesia’s highly heterogeneous Air Force fleet, which includes Western, Russian, Brazilian, and Asian aircraft. Current inventory comprises 33 F-16s, 16 Suhois, 21 Hawk 209, 16 T-50i, and 13 EMB 314 platforms, making Indonesia one of the world’s most diversified air forces.

Budget and Financial Arrangements

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa confirmed a $9 billion budget allocation for FY 2026. Whether these funds cover the J-10 purchase directly or broader modernization programs remains under verification. A potential state-to-state financing mechanism would facilitate rapid delivery and operational readiness.

Strategic and Diplomatic Context

The J-10 acquisition underscores Indonesia’s strengthening defense and diplomatic ties with China, especially after joining BRICS in January 2025 and expanding bilateral trade to $135 billion. Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin’s announcement marks a new stage in strategic military cooperation between Jakarta and Beijing.

Regional and Operational Contributions

The J-10 fleet will sustain Indonesia’s medium-weight fighter capabilities before the gradual induction of Rafale and F-15EX aircraft. The diverse inventory provides flexibility for training and operational deployment, enhancing regional deterrence and defense readiness across Southeast Asia.
