Argentina’s Ministry of Defense has unveiled plans to acquire 72 self-propelled artillery systems between 2026 and 2028, marking one of the largest modernization efforts for the country’s land forces in decades.
A Strategic Move to Rebuild Ground Firepower
The official investment plan, titled “Anexo PNIP 2026–2028,” outlines the incorporation of new artillery vehicles for the 1st, 2nd, 9th, and 10th Armored Artillery Groups. Many of the platforms currently in service are over 40 years old, underscoring the urgency of renewal.
Although no specific platform or budget has been disclosed, the plan’s inclusion in Argentina’s multi-year defense investment annex demonstrates a clear commitment to revitalizing the country’s armored fire-support units.
Possible Candidates: ATMOS and M109 KAWEST
The Argentine Army has assessed several 155 mm self-propelled howitzers, including the Israeli ATMOS and the Swiss-upgraded M109 KAWEST. While internal evaluations reportedly favored these models, no formal procurement contract has been announced to date.
Unofficial sources suggest figures of up to 76 vehicles and an estimated $160 million budget, though these remain unconfirmed in government documents.
Toward a Broader Modernization Effort
The artillery initiative complements other defense upgrades, including F-16 fighter acquisitions from Denmark and the deployment of new radar systems. These developments signal Buenos Aires’ intent to gradually restore credible defense capabilities while maintaining fiscal caution.
Experts note that Argentina’s inclusion of the artillery renewal project in its official investment plan represents a rare instance of continuity in defense policy, reflecting a long-term commitment to modernization and regional deterrence.
