U.S. 139th Airlift Wing Receives First H3 C-130 Hercules in Modernization Drive

The U.S. Air National Guard’s 139th Airlift Wing has received its first H3 variant C-130 Hercules transport aircraft as part of a broader modernization plan. The aircraft was transferred from Montana’s 120th Airlift Wing.

The arrival marks a key step in replacing the Wing’s aging H2 and H2.5 aircraft with newer, more reliable airframes. The H3 model offers improved durability, sustainment advantages, and compatibility with next-generation digital avionics, making it a significant upgrade over older variants.

Equipped with NP2000 eight-blade propellers, the H3 delivers increased thrust, reduced vibration, lower noise, and faster engine response. Cockpit enhancements also improve pilot visibility and situational awareness during tactical operations.

After arriving at Rosecrans Air National Guard Base in Missouri, the aircraft entered standard acceptance inspections. Additional H3 aircraft are expected to join the Wing, including one from Illinois as it transitions to the C-130J. The modernization enhances the 139th Airlift Wing’s ability to support homeland defense, joint exercises, and global airlift missions while aligning with the U.S. Air Force’s focus on agile, rapid-response mobility.
