18 F-16s from the Netherlands to Romania

In a significant move to enhance NATO’s defense posture on its eastern flank, the Netherlands has decided to transfer 18 F-16 fighter jets to Romania for a symbolic price of just one euro. These aircraft will not be used for combat missions, but exclusively for pilot training as part of a multinational F-16 training center under NATO.

Speaking at a joint press conference held in The Hague, Romanian Defense Minister Ionuț Moșteanu emphasized the strategic importance of this transfer for NATO’s regional defense capabilities. He noted that the jets will be delivered by the end of 2025, contributing to the training infrastructure already established in Romania.

One Euro and a Memorandum: The Process Officially Begins

Moșteanu announced that he had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dutch Minister of Defense, officially launching the technical process for both the aircraft transfer and the institutionalization of the training operations. “The next steps will be shaped through expert-level technical discussions,” he said, confirming that the 18 F-16s will become the property of the Romanian state by the end of this year.

Training Center Expands, Cooperation Deepens

The multinational F-16 training center, operational since 2023, will gain even more regional significance with this aircraft transfer. The center aims to provide training not only for Romanian pilots, but also for aviators from other NATO member states. This step is viewed as part of NATO’s broader strategy to enhance readiness and deterrence capabilities on its eastern front.

Romania’s F-16 Fleet to Reach 67 Aircraft

Romania currently operates two F-16 squadrons stationed at Borcea and Câmpia Turzii air bases, comprising 35 aircraft previously acquired from Portugal (2016–2017 and 2020–2021) and Norway. According to the ongoing delivery schedule, an additional 14 aircraft from Norway are expected to arrive by the end of 2025.

With the 18 jets from the Netherlands, Romania’s total F-16 fleet will grow to 67 aircraft, placing the country among the leading NATO members in Eastern Europe with a modern and capable air combat force.
