Spain is setting a new global benchmark in naval technology with the development of the F-110 frigate—a next-generation, multi-purpose warship designed to strengthen maritime defense, modernize naval operations, and catalyze industrial transformation.
Commissioned by the Spanish Navy and built by Navantia, the F-110 class frigates are equipped with comprehensive combat capabilities, including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare systems. These powerful escort ships are engineered to operate effectively within joint task forces, making them highly adaptable for modern naval missions ranging from strategic force projection to maritime security and civil support roles.
What sets the F-110 apart, however, is its groundbreaking technological foundation. Dubbed a true “Smart Ship” of the 21st century, the vessel integrates cutting-edge digital technologies to redefine how modern fleets are built, operated, and maintained.
At the core of this innovation is Navantia’s Digital Twin, a virtual counterpart of the physical ship. Developed in collaboration with the Spanish Navy and the General Directorate for Armament and Material (DGAM), this advanced system leverages cloud computing, machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to optimize real-time decision-making, predictive maintenance, and crew training.

In addition, the F-110 will be the first Spanish frigate class to feature onboard 3D printing capabilities. Through partnership with Navantia’s Center of Excellence for Additive Manufacturing (CEFAN), these ships can fabricate essential spare parts at sea—significantly enhancing operational readiness and logistical independence.
Another major innovation is the Integrated Services System (ISS), a neural network developed alongside the Universities of Vigo and Coruña. By unifying lighting, communication, security, and environmental controls into a single, sensorized platform, the ISS reduces wiring complexity and enhances ship-crew interaction with over 2,000 intelligent light nodes.
Beyond its military value, the F-110 is acting as the driving force behind Navantia’s digital transformation strategy. The Ferrol shipyard, where the frigates are being constructed, is being reshaped into a global hub for high-tech shipbuilding. A fully digitized Block Factory and a new Digital Twin Center of Excellence are under development, positioning Ferrol as a leader in future frigate production.
By aligning naval strength with industrial modernization, the F-110 project not only boosts Spain’s defense capabilities but also strengthens national technological sovereignty. It is also expected to open significant export opportunities for Spain, as allied nations seek to modernize their own naval fleets.
As the first of these advanced frigates prepares to enter service, Spain signals its intent to lead the next wave of naval innovation on the world stage.
