Germany has launched a major effort to strengthen its submarine fleet against future threats. The Federal Ministry of Defence announced that it has signed a €800 million contract with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) to modernize six Type 212A class submarines operated by the German Navy.
The 10-year modernization program will primarily focus on the first batch of four submarines, upgrading key systems such as navigation, command and control, and weapon systems. These upgrades are expected to significantly enhance the submarines’ mission management capabilities and operational efficiency.
Equipped with advanced air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology, the Type 212A submarines feature a displacement of 1,830 tons and a length of 56 meters. Renowned for their stealth capabilities, the submarines are armed with six torpedo tubes and can carry up to 13 heavyweight torpedoes, making them vital assets for underwater defense and attack missions.+

Upon completion of the modernization process, the Type 212A fleet will gain not only extended operational endurance but also improved electronic warfare and underwater detection systems. This move is seen as a strategic step in future-proofing Germany’s submarine force within the NATO framework.
