IRIS-T SLM: Germany’s Cutting-Edge Medium-Range Air Defense System Strengthening Ukraine’s Security

The IRIS-T SLM, developed by German defense manufacturer Diehl Defense, stands out as a highly advanced medium-range air defense missile system providing comprehensive 360-degree protection against a broad spectrum of aerial threats including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and guided weapons.

Designed for rapid and simultaneous engagement of multiple targets within very short reaction times, the IRIS-T SLM integrates seamlessly with various multi-function radar systems and offers both mobile and stationary deployment options. The launcher is mounted on a robust MAN SX45 8×8 military truck chassis equipped with eight ready-to-launch missile containers, combining mobility with high firepower.

The missile itself, derived from the successful IRIS-T air-to-air missile, features a sophisticated infrared seeker paired with thrust vector control and a radar proximity fuse, enabling unparalleled maneuverability and accuracy even against highly agile targets and missile threats. Its guidance system employs combined radio command with inertial and satellite corrections, culminating in a maximum effective range of 40 kilometers at altitudes up to 20 kilometers.

Significantly, the IRIS-T SLM system has played an essential role in bolstering Ukraine’s air defense. Since the first deliveries in 2022, multiple units have been supplied by Germany, the Netherlands, and Latvia, reflecting strong international cooperation. Estonian and Latvian defense ministries are also actively negotiating further acquisitions of the system.

Supporting components such as the HENSOLDT TRML-4D multifunctional radar and Airbus Tactical Operation Centre software enhance target detection, command, and control capabilities. The radar can detect fighter aircraft up to 120 kilometers and supersonic missiles up to 60 kilometers in a full 360-degree coverage zone.

Powered by a MAN turbocharged diesel engine, the IRIS-T SLM launcher trucks can maneuver alongside combat vehicles across difficult terrains at speeds up to 90 km/h, ensuring quick repositioning on the battlefield.

Combining state-of-the-art missile technology, advanced sensors, and flexible deployment, the IRIS-T SLM system represents a formidable asset in modern air defense, safeguarding allied forces against evolving aerial threats.
