Pakistan Boosts Naval Power with Acquisition of British LCAC(L) Hovercraft

Tthe United Kingdom finalized the sale of three LCAC(L) hovercraft—Landing Craft Air Cushion (Light)—to the Pakistan Navy, marking a significant enhancement in Pakistan’s amphibious and coastal response capabilities. The announcement was made by the UK’s Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) agency, which oversaw the transaction through CN Romtehnica S.A., including a full suite of spare parts and long-term support services.

Originally operated by the British Royal Marines and retired in 2021, these hovercraft were comprehensively refurbished by Griffon Marine Support under a 2022 contract and are now ready for renewed service. Their induction represents a strategic leap forward for Pakistan as it focuses on boosting its maritime domain awareness, littoral defense, and humanitarian readiness along its 1,046-kilometer Arabian Sea coastline.

Tactical Edge for Complex Maritime Environments

The LCAC(L) hovercraft were originally built to bypass traditional port infrastructure by delivering troops, vehicles, and equipment directly from ship to shore. Their ability to operate over water, mudflats, and difficult terrain makes them exceptionally suited for Pakistan’s marshlands, riverine regions, and flood-prone coastal zones—areas where conventional boats are largely ineffective.

For Pakistan, these platforms will enable rapid troop deployments, coastal reconnaissance, and humanitarian operations in times of natural disasters such as floods and cyclones. The craft’s high-speed amphibious capability also offers quick-reaction options in volatile coastal scenarios.

Platform Specifications and Versatility

Based on the Griffon 2400TD model, each LCAC(L) hovercraft is 12.7 meters long and can reach speeds up to 34 knots (63 km/h). With a beam of 6.8 meters, they can transport 16 fully equipped soldiers or carry 2.4 tonnes of cargo. A Deutz diesel engine generating 440 kW powers the vessel, providing strong propulsion across diverse terrain.

Key features include:

  • Armoured crew compartment with bullet-resistant windows and modular armor.
  • FLIR turret and maritime radar for night and low-visibility operations.
  • General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) mounted for self-defense.
  • Airlift compatibility with aircraft like the C-130J, A400M, and C-17.

These specifications make the LCAC(L) an ideal asset for fast troop insertions, resupply missions, surveillance, and evacuations in both conflict zones and disaster-hit regions.

Strengthening Bilateral Defence Ties

This acquisition builds on a long-standing UK–Pakistan defense partnership that spans decades, including military training, counter-terrorism cooperation, and joint maritime initiatives. The addition of these hovercraft to Pakistan’s fleet reflects deepening trust and strategic alignment between the two countries.

Commodore Richard Whalley of DE&S emphasized that the sale not only meets Pakistan’s immediate operational needs but also demonstrates the UK’s commitment to maximizing the lifecycle of its defense assets through responsible exports. A spokesperson from the Pakistan Navy also highlighted the hovercraft’s critical role in enhancing both national security and disaster relief operations, confirming continued technical support from Griffon Marine Support to maintain operational readiness.

Strategic Maritime Impact

As maritime security challenges increase in South Asia, the LCAC(L) gives Pakistan a decisive mobility and flexibility advantage. The hovercraft’s unique capabilities fill an operational gap between heavy amphibious craft and rigid inflatable boats, enhancing both military effectiveness and civilian response capacity. Their integration into Pakistan’s naval doctrine signals a forward-leaning posture in regional security and disaster preparedness—while reinforcing Islamabad’s ability to respond swiftly across its diverse coastal geography.
