Boxer MIV APC Tests Javelin Missile, Boosting British Army’s Anti-Tank Capabilities

Rheinmetall shared a video on LinkedIn on August 19, 2025, showing the Boxer MIV infantry carrier vehicle for the British Army successfully testing its compatibility with the Javelin anti-tank missile. This milestone represents a significant step in the Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) program, giving British forces the ability to engage armored threats directly from within the vehicle while remaining protected.

The testing included adapting the Javelin system to the Kongsberg RS4 remote weapon station, integrated by Thales in Glasgow. This versatile station can be equipped with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, a 30 mm autocannon, or guided missiles. Integrating the Javelin transforms the Boxer MIV into a combat-ready vehicle capable of transporting troops while delivering effective anti-tank fire. The successful trials pave the way for further testing and demonstration phases before the system enters operational service.

As the first Boxer MIV units are delivered from both UK and German production lines, the program is entering a new phase. Crew training will intensify, and units are preparing for integration into mechanized formations. Produced by KNDS UK in Stockport and RBSL in Telford, the Boxer MIV relies on a national supply chain supporting hundreds of skilled jobs. Beyond operational benefits, the program represents a strategic investment in the UK defense sector and ensures autonomy in production and maintenance.

The Boxer MIV preserves the core characteristics of the Boxer family. Its modular armor provides high-level ballistic and mine protection in line with NATO standards. The interchangeable module design allows rapid reconfiguration for various roles: troop transport, command post, medical evacuation, or combat. With a 700-horsepower diesel engine, it can reach 100 km/h and has an operational range exceeding 1,000 km, giving mechanized units extensive mobility.

Adding the Javelin missile equips the Boxer MIV with a critical new capability. The short- to medium-range anti-tank missile is combat-proven and used by many allied nations. Its “fire and forget” guidance enables crews to fire and maneuver immediately without exposure. It can neutralize main battle tanks, lighter armored vehicles, and fortified positions. In a context of growing armored threats and high-intensity European operations, this capability is highly relevant.

Operationally, the Boxer MIV with Javelin enhances the British Army’s mechanized brigades. Units gain more autonomy, stronger defenses against enemy armor, and increased effectiveness in area control, interdiction, and deterrence. Immediate engagement of threats directly from the vehicle improves survivability and combat performance.

For Rheinmetall, this integration highlights the Boxer’s adaptability to changing battlefield conditions and well-equipped adversaries. By equipping the Boxer MIV with Javelin, the UK increases operational flexibility while maintaining NATO interoperability.

This milestone is more than a technical upgrade; it represents industrial development, national economic impact, and enhanced British Army firepower. Completion of trials and expanded training will make this configuration a central component of the UK’s land forces modernization.
