Colombia to Commission New Offshore Patrol Vessel ARC 24 de Julio for Pacific and Caribbean Operations

The Colombian Navy is set to launch its first locally designed and built Offshore Patrol Vessel (POC class), ARC 24 de Julio, constructed by state-owned Cotecmar under the Ministry of Defense. This 93-meter vessel is poised to enhance Colombia’s maritime security capabilities across both the Pacific and Caribbean theaters.

With a displacement of 2,665 tons and a top speed of 20 knots, ARC 24 de Julio offers up to 40 days endurance and a range of 10,000 nautical miles, enabling sustained patrols and missions. The ship accommodates 64 crew members with additional capacity for up to 109 mission personnel depending on configuration. It supports deployment of two 14-meter interceptor boats, a helicopter hangar, UAV systems, and modular mission containers.

The vessel’s armament includes a Leonardo 76/62 mm main naval gun, a 25 mm M242 Bushmaster remote weapon station, multiple machine guns, and optional anti-ship missile launchers. Its aviation capabilities are tailored to operate helicopters up to 11 tons such as Bell 412EP and navalized AW-139, along with UAV launch and recovery systems.

ARC 24 de Julio embodies Colombia’s strategic focus on domestic naval production to reduce foreign dependency and boost regional maritime security. It is a central element of the PES (Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie) program, scheduled for launch by late 2025 and delivery in early 2026. The Colombian Navy plans a fleet of five POC vessels alongside logistical support ships to expand its surface fleet and maintain operational versatility.

The program also aims to strengthen Colombia’s shipbuilding industry and maritime defense infrastructure, reinforcing national sovereignty and contributing to regional stability in critical waterways.
