French Army Introduces Griffon MEPAC 120 mm Mortar Vehicles to 3rd Marine Artillery Regiment

The French Army has officially deployed the Griffon MEPAC 120 mm self-propelled mortar system, with the first units delivered to the 3rd Marine Artillery Regiment. Designed to strengthen indirect fire capabilities, the platform combines high mobility with advanced fire-control systems, providing faster and more precise support to frontline units.

Weighing around 25 tons, the Griffon MEPAC is equipped with a rifled 120 mm mortar featuring semi-automatic loading. Its integrated digital command-and-control suite reduces the time from target acquisition to fire, ensuring timely support for infantry and armoured formations. The vehicle also carries a remote-controlled weapon station and smoke launchers for close-range defense and concealment.

A total of 54 vehicles are scheduled for production, with each artillery regiment expected to field eight systems. This distributed approach ensures that indirect fire assets remain available across the force, improving responsiveness during high-intensity operations. Capable of both rapid bursts of fire and sustained engagements, the MEPAC provides versatility on the battlefield.

The system’s key advantage lies in its ability to quickly deploy, fire, and relocate before enemy counter-battery measures take effect. This shoot-and-scoot doctrine enhances survivability while maintaining tempo in modern, fast-moving combat environments.
