French Navy Set to Acquire PC-24 Jets for Short and Unpaved Airstrip Operations

The French Navy is moving to accelerate its fleet renewal and boost operational flexibility by integrating three PC-24 “Super Versatile Jet” aircraft from Pilatus. The jets are being acquired via a lease agreement through Jet Aviation France, with the first delivery scheduled for February 2026.

Fleet Renewal and Operational Edge

  • Addressing Urgent Needs: This acquisition addresses an urgent fleet renewal requirement, specifically taking over parts of the Falcon 10 Mer (DA10) support mission set, most notably IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) pilot training for naval aviators.
  • Unique Mission Capabilities: The PC-24’s key advantages are its ability to operate from short and unpaved airstrips, its single-pilot certification, and the inclusion of a standard cargo door. These features make it exceptionally suited for daily liaison, VIP/utility transport, and light logistics tasks.
  • Acquisition Model: The leasing structure, managed by Jet Aviation, is designed to speed up entry into service and secure lifetime support, aligning with a broader trend among European forces to outsource sustainment and convert capital expenditure into predictable operating costs. The combined support from Jet Aviation and Pilatus CrystalCare is expected to deliver high sortie rates and ensure maximum aircraft availability.
  • Technical Specifications: Powered by twin Williams FJ44-4A turbofans, the PC-24 cruises up to 440 KTAS and excels in austere access environments, capable of taking off (942m at MTOW) and landing (735m over a 50-ft obstacle) on short strips. Its pressurized cabin and flat floor, accessible via the large cargo door, enable quick reconfiguration between different mission types.

Strategically, the introduction of the PC-24 expands the Navy’s training and mobility options with a modern, low-footprint jet. This approach reduces crew burden for routine tasks and frees up more expensive combat or surveillance assets for core operational missions.
