French Navy To Extend Naval Reach With BRF Jacques Stosskopf Replenishment Ship

The French Navy is set to take delivery of its second Force Replenishment Ship, BRF Jacques Stosskopf, at Toulon in late 2025 under the FLOTLOG program. Based on the Italian Vulcano design, this large replenishment oiler significantly enhances France’s ability to sustain carrier strike and amphibious groups at distance and within NATO task forces.

Measuring 194 meters in length and 27.6 meters in beam, Jacques Stosskopf displaces around 31,000 tonnes at full load, making it one of the largest surface units in the fleet after the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and ahead of the Mistral-class amphibious assault ships.

The ship’s technical capabilities reflect the French Navy’s scale ambitions. Jacques Stosskopf can carry nearly 13,000 m³ of fuel, including marine diesel and aviation fuel, transferring up to 1,200 m³ per hour at sea. It can also transport approximately 1,500 tonnes of solid cargo in its holds and containers. Its diesel-electric propulsion, powered by four MAN engines producing around 24 MW, allows speeds close to 20 knots for long-range operations.

Equipped with the Polaris combat management system, Terma Scanter 6002 air-surveillance radar, and Safran Paseo XLR optronic systems, the BRF contributes to tactical awareness while providing close-in protection. The arrival of Jacques Stosskopf strengthens the logistical posture of the French ocean-going fleet, supporting carrier strike groups, amphibious units, and allied operations.

The FLOTLOG program not only modernizes the fleet but also ensures France’s autonomous ocean-projection capability. Replacing aging BCR ships with BRFs designed for high-intensity and long-duration missions increases interoperability with NATO and EU naval groups, securing France’s long-term naval credibility.
