The German Defense Procurement Agency (BAAINBw) has signed a contract worth approximately €3 billion with General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS). Under the agreement, GDELS will provide the German Army (Bundeswehr) with modern LUCHS 2 reconnaissance vehicles.
The new vehicles are designed to replace the current Fennek 4×4 reconnaissance vehicles, offering capabilities tailored to modern combat environments.
Built on the PIRANHA Platform
The LUCHS 2 is developed on GDELS’ PIRANHA 6×6 wheeled armored vehicle platform. It features amphibious capabilities, advanced sensor integration, and low thermal-acoustic signatures, making it suitable for contemporary battlefield conditions. The contract covers not only vehicle production but also simulators, training systems, spare parts, and logistics support.
Cost and Schedule Are Our Priority
Dr. Thomas Kauffmann, GDELS Germany Director, commented on the agreement:
“Being chosen as the main contractor for the Bundeswehr’s new reconnaissance vehicle is both an honor and a responsibility. Delivering on time and within budget is our top priority. We also thank BAAINBw for their professional and collaborative approach throughout this process.”
GDELS President Antonio Bueno added:
“Bundeswehr’s decision reaffirms the trust placed in GDELS as one of Europe’s leading land systems manufacturers.”
Delivery and Integration Process
The production of the first vehicles is scheduled to begin in the near future. The program also includes system integration, training activities, and the establishment of maintenance infrastructure. GDELS has confirmed that all contractual obligations will be fulfilled according to the agreed budget and schedule.
