Greece has officially greenlit the modernization of 38 F-16C/D Block 50 fighters, bringing them up to the advanced F-16V Viper configuration. With this addition, Athens aims to expand its total fleet of upgraded Vipers to 121 aircraft, reinforcing its long-term air superiority strategy.
Scope of the Upgrade
Once completed, the Block 50 jets will match the capability level of Greece’s ongoing Block 52+/52M modernization program. The upgrade package includes:
- AN/APG-83 SABR AESA radar, offering extended detection range and enhanced target tracking
- New mission computer and modern avionics providing increased processing power
- Enhanced cockpit layout with updated multifunction displays
- Link-16 and satellite-based communication suites
- Improved electronic warfare and self-protection systems
Timeline and Implementation
The upgrade effort is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the majority of the work to be carried out by Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI).
As of 2025, Greece has already received the first 42 modernized F-16V aircraft, and the Block 52+ upgrade program is progressing steadily. By bringing the Block 50 fleet to the Viper level, Greece aims to consolidate its fleet into a single, modern, and maintenance-efficient F-16V force.
