Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), the indigenous jet trainer aircraft HÜRJET is set to fill a critical gap in the Spanish Air Force’s training fleet. Under the planned delivery program, a total of 12 aircraft are expected to be handed over to the Spanish military by 2029.
Jointly executed by TUSAŞ and Spanish defense industry companies, the project is anticipated to contribute approximately €2.8 million to the Spanish economy and create employment for 792 people. The industrial cooperation, led by Airbus and involving 15 Spanish companies, was formally announced during the FEINDEF defense exhibition.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles emphasized the importance of the initiative in her statement to the Senate Defense Committee, noting that the project goes beyond a procurement deal and includes a joint development process. Robles also highlighted that developing a Spanish version of HÜRJET is among the program’s key objectives.
The next-generation training aircraft HÜRJET will replace the aging F-5 jets currently operated by the 23rd Squadron stationed at Talavera la Real Air Base in Badajoz. The program is expected to stimulate significant economic activity and job creation across several regions in Spain, including Madrid, Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, the Basque Country, and Extremadura.
Launched in 2024, this collaboration represents a major step in transferring Turkey’s defense technology capabilities to the European market. With manufacturing and development processes taking place in Spain, HÜRJET is poised to serve as a modern and versatile platform tailored to regional defense needs across Europe.
