Japan Sends 30 More Military Vehicles to Ukraine

Japan’s Ministry of Defense has announced the dispatch of an additional 30 Self-Defense Forces (SDF) vehicles to Ukraine. The shipment includes 28 “1/2-ton trucks” and two high-mobility vehicles intended for personnel and cargo transport.

Total Vehicles Delivered

With this delivery, the total number of SDF vehicles sent to Ukraine rises to 131. Previously, Japan provided various support vehicles, including Mitsubishi-manufactured Type 73 Kogata trucks and Morooka tracked carriers designed for transporting equipment and supplies across challenging terrain.

Enhancing Operational Capacity

The Ministry stated that the vehicles will boost Ukraine’s mobility for both troops and materials, strengthening operational capability. While Japan’s pacifist constitution limits direct combat support, the government has expanded non-lethal assistance such as equipment support, humanitarian aid, and logistical vehicles.

Support Within Legal Framework

The ministry emphasized that all vehicles are strictly for non-combat use under Japan’s legal framework. Tokyo’s aid also includes bulletproof vests, helmets, commercial drones, and medical supplies, all consistent with regulations allowing only non-lethal defense equipment exports.

International Significance

Japan’s increasing support represents a rare case of military assistance from a country traditionally strict on arms exports. Amid ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, Tokyo’s efforts signal a deeper international alignment with Ukraine’s defense.
