Netherlands Modernizes Marine Corps with 150 Kaaiman DXPVs Based on U.S. JLTV Design

In a strategic move to enhance its expeditionary capabilities, the Netherlands has placed an order for 150 Kaaiman light tactical vehicles, a customized variant of the U.S.-developed Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). Announced by Oshkosh Defense Europe B.V. on June 25, 2025, the contract was signed in Doorn, marking a significant milestone in the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps’ modernization journey.

The Kaaiman, formally known as the Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicle (DXPV), is built on the battle-proven JLTV chassis engineered by Oshkosh Defense. Originally designed to replace the aging Humvee fleet in the U.S. military, the JLTV platform delivers high mobility, advanced survivability, and digital battlefield connectivity. It’s equipped with the TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension and a modular structure that adapts to various mission profiles, making it ideal for rough terrains and rapid deployment.

Tailored specifically for the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps, the Kaaiman variant enhances the core JLTV design with upgrades suited for Dutch and NATO operational environments. Enhancements include improved communication systems compatible with multinational networks, ergonomic interior adaptations for long-duration missions, and modifications for seamless use in amphibious and coastal operations. The vehicle is optimized to deploy quickly from naval vessels, fitting perfectly within the Marine Corps’ maritime force projection doctrine.

The Korps Mariniers, known for its rapid response and amphibious warfare specialization, operates under high-readiness conditions and participates in a range of missions—from domestic defense to NATO and UN deployments. The arrival of the Kaaiman will significantly boost the Corps’ mobility, protection, and operational interoperability, particularly in complex littoral and urban conflict zones.

This acquisition not only strengthens the Netherlands’ expeditionary land forces but also deepens transatlantic defense ties with the United States. The introduction of the Kaaiman sets a new benchmark for light tactical vehicles among NATO allies and underscores the Netherlands’ dedication to modern, agile, and integrated defense capabilities in the evolving global security landscape.
