New Roadmap from the European Union to Lead in Quantum Technologies

The European Commission has announced a new strategic plan aiming to make the EU a world leader in quantum technologies by 2030. Within this framework, various financial and structural supports will be provided to foster the growth of initiatives in the quantum sector. Additionally, a comprehensive ecosystem will be established to accelerate the transformation of quantum innovations into practical applications across Europe.

The strategy will focus on five main areas: “Research and innovation,” “Strengthening quantum infrastructures,” “Ecosystem development,” “Space and dual-use technologies,” and “Enhancing quantum skills.”

The EU and its member states will launch the “European Quantum Research and Innovation Initiative,” which aims to support fundamental quantum research and develop new applications through collaboration between the public and private sectors.

To commercialize scientific discoveries, a quantum design center and six quantum chip pilot lines will be established with public funding of up to 50 million euros. Furthermore, a dedicated pilot facility for the European Quantum Internet will be put into operation.

To raise the level of expertise in quantum technologies, a Europe-wide academy is planned, and the amount of funding allocated to quantum companies will be increased.

Currently, 50% of global private sector quantum investments flow to the US and 40% to China. Europe aims to increase its share of financing in this field and strengthen its own position in quantum technologies.
