In a significant step toward strengthening its aerial defense infrastructure, the Paraguayan Air Force has officially received four A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft from Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer. The delivery is part of a broader agreement signed in 2024, which includes six aircraft, mission-specific equipment, logistical support, and a flight simulation system.
The handover ceremony took place at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Luque, near the capital Asunción, with high-level government, military, and defense officials in attendance. The aircraft are configured for a variety of missions—ranging from close air support and reconnaissance to pilot training and border patrol operations—underscoring Paraguay’s focus on multipurpose platforms to meet diverse security challenges.
The procurement, valued at approximately $100 million and financed through a Brazilian government-backed loan, highlights growing strategic cooperation between Brazil and Paraguay in defense modernization. The final two Super Tucano units are expected to arrive later this year.
Air Force Commander General Júlio Fullaondo described the acquisition as a “milestone moment” in the evolution of Paraguay’s military aviation. “This is the most advanced military aviation system our country has acquired in nearly four decades,” he stated. “More than an expenditure, it’s an investment in sovereignty, peace, and long-term development.”
Inside the A-29 Super Tucano
Designed for both combat and training, the A-29 Super Tucano boasts advanced avionics, precision targeting systems, and a rugged airframe suited for harsh operational environments. It can deploy a wide range of munitions, including guided bombs, cannons, and air-to-surface missiles.
Powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop engine producing 1,600 horsepower, and paired with a five-blade Hartzell propeller, the A-29 achieves a top speed of 320 knots (593 km/h) and can operate at altitudes up to 35,000 feet. With a combat range of over 1,300 kilometers, it is particularly well-suited for patrolling Paraguay’s vast territory and border regions.
With this acquisition, Paraguay not only upgrades its air fleet, but also positions itself as a more capable regional player in defense cooperation and aerial security.
