Poland Chooses Saab’s A26 Submarine as Cornerstone of Its Future Fleet

Poland has officially selected Sweden’s A26 Blekinge-class submarines for its long-awaited Orka submarine modernization program, marking one of the most significant defense decisions of recent years. Warsaw plans to invest approximately 10 billion Polish zloty ($2.52 billion) in the acquisition of three next-generation submarines.

Replacing Soviet-Era Capability With Modern Technology

The decision represents a major step toward replacing the Polish Navy’s sole Soviet-era Kilo-class diesel-electric submarine with a modern and capable underwater fleet. Sweden’s bid prevailed over strong competition from Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, France’s Naval Group, Italy’s Fincantieri, Spain’s Navantia, and South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean.

Contract Not Yet Signed

Officials from both countries emphasized that the selection does not yet constitute a binding order. Final contract negotiations are expected to conclude by the end of 2025, but key questions remain — including whether Poland will receive newly built A26 submarines or a package that includes used Swedish vessels.

A New Chapter in Warsaw–Stockholm Relations

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz called the decision a “historic milestone” for both the armed forces and bilateral ties with Sweden. He stated that an intergovernmental agreement could be signed by the end of the year, clearing the way for submarine deliveries around 2030 and significantly strengthening Poland’s underwater deterrence in the Baltic Sea.

Saab’s Response: “A Strategic Fit”

Saab CEO Micael Johansson welcomed Poland’s selection of the A26 Blekinge-class, highlighting the submarine’s “strategic suitability” for Baltic Sea missions. He added that Saab looks forward to concluding negotiations with Poland’s Armaments Agency in the coming months.

A26 Blekinge-Class: A New-Generation Silent Hunter

Known for its low acoustic signature, advanced hull design, and modern sensor suite, the A26 is regarded as one of the most capable diesel-electric submarines designed for operations in constrained and shallow waters like the Baltic Sea. This operational advantage is widely seen as a key factor behind Poland’s decision.
