Romania Seeks Approval for 216 New Main Battle Tanks

Romanian lawmakers received a request to authorize the second phase of the country’s main battle tank recapitalization, covering 216 new tanks plus support variants at an estimated €6.5 billion before VAT. The platform choice remains open, with Abrams, Leopard 2A8, and K2 Black Panther as leading candidates. This phase would complement the 54 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks previously approved and ensure NATO-standard 120 mm ammunition, active protection systems, and digital command-and-control integration.

Currently, Romania operates TR-85M1 Bizonul tanks, modernized T-55 derivatives with 100 mm guns and limited digital features. The new fleet would deliver higher firepower, modern armor, APS, and networked battlefield management, improving deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank. Abrams offers U.S.-aligned logistics and mature sustainment; Leopard 2A8 provides European integration and potential local assembly; K2 Black Panther delivers high mobility and rapid firing.

Parliament will weigh delivery schedules, domestic industrial participation, and full support packages. The initiative reflects Romania’s transition from legacy T-series tanks to a digitally networked, NATO-compliant heavy force.
