Saab Secures New Gripen E/F Fighter Jet Order for Thailand

On August 25, 2025, Saab signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply four Gripen E/F fighter jets to the Kingdom of Thailand. Valued at approximately SEK 5.3 billion ($583 million), the agreement includes deliveries scheduled between 2025 and 2030. The package consists of three single-seat Gripen E aircraft and one two-seat Gripen F, alongside equipment, support, and pilot training. Saab also concluded a long-term offset agreement with the Royal Thai Air Force, encompassing technology transfer, industrial cooperation, and economic investment. This program aligns aircraft acquisition with Thailand’s broader defense modernization goals.

The Gripen E/F can carry up to seven Meteor long-range air-to-air missiles and two IRIS-T short-range missiles for air superiority missions, in addition to precision-guided bombs and reconnaissance pods for ground operations. Thailand already operates a squadron of Gripen C/D fighters, and the new E/F aircraft will integrate with the existing fleet, extending operational life and enhancing combat capability.

The aircraft have already been tested in combat. On July 26, 2025, Royal Thai Air Force Gripens participated in the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict, marking the first operational combat use of the Gripen by Thailand. The deployment provided valuable experience for pilots and ground crews, demonstrating the aircraft’s performance in real-world operations.

The Gripen E/F series features a maximum takeoff weight of 16,500 kg, a wingspan of 8.6 meters, and lengths of 15.2 meters (E) and 15.9 meters (F). Powered by General Electric F414G turbofan engines producing 98 kN of thrust, the aircraft have ten hardpoints, can refuel in flight, and feature rapid turnaround times. The avionics suite includes AESA radar, IRST, and a comprehensive electronic warfare system, integrated via networked sensor fusion and supported by Link 16 and national data links. AI-assisted interfaces reduce pilot workload and enhance responsiveness.

By acquiring the Gripen E/F, Thailand will strengthen its airspace security and regional defense capabilities. Deliveries from 2025 to 2030 establish long-term commitment to the Gripen system, while the offset agreement ensures broader industrial and economic benefits beyond the defense sector.
