South Korea to Boost Defense and Space Research Investments Through 2030

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced that the government plans to significantly increase funding for research and development in defense and aerospace sectors through 2030.

According to Yonhap News, Lee made the statement during the opening of the Seoul International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2025.

South Korea’s Defense Vision

Lee emphasized that the nation aims to remain among the world’s top four defense powers. To achieve this, an “unprecedented budget” will be allocated for R&D in defense and aerospace sectors through 2030. The investment will focus on independently developing domestic technologies, components, and materials, including critical areas such as specialized semiconductors.

Legislation and Policy Reforms

The President highlighted that comprehensive regulatory and policy reforms will be undertaken to accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies. Efforts will also be made to reduce entry barriers for mid-sized companies wishing to participate in the defense and aerospace industries. Lee noted that these sectors require substantial financing and expertise, stressing the importance of international cooperation.
