Recovery and Reusability
Starship and Super Heavy re-enter the atmosphere using dynamic control fins in a body-flap (belly-flop) maneuver, then reignite their engines for a precise vertical landing. This enables rapid reuse both on Earth and other celestial bodies. Super Heavy is caught by the launch tower’s robotic arms, allowing it to be quickly refurbished and prepared for the next launch without extensive maintenance.
Mission Profile
- Earth orbit: Transporting large-volume satellites and scientific payloads
- Lunar missions: A Human Landing System (HLS) variant is being developed as part of NASA’s Artemis program to carry astronauts to the Moon

Strategic Base: Starbase
Located in Boca Chica, Texas, Starbase serves as the design, manufacturing, testing, and launch facility for Starship. The site features an integrated robotic launch tower that facilitates rapid system integration and reusability.
