The Peruvian Army is procuring 54 K2 Black Panther tanks from South Korea.

The framework agreement signed between South Korea and Peru marks the beginning of a new era in the history of the Latin American defense industry. At a ceremony held in Lima between the Government of Peru and the South Korean defense firm Hyundai Rotem, a comprehensive plan for the procurement of 54 K2 Black Panther main battle tanks and 141 K808 wheeled armored vehicles was formalized. This agreement will mark a first for the sale of K2 tanks in the Latin American market.

The framework agreement signed between Peru and South Korea on December 9 will not be limited to direct delivery but will also cover advanced fields such as local assembly, industrial participation, and technology cooperation.

Under the project, which will involve collaboration between Hyundai Rotem and the Peruvian state-owned facilities of FAME S.A.C., cooperation will take place in the production of parts and vehicles, aiming to increase the capacity of Peru’s defense industry.

Modernization and Strengthening of Strategic Alliance

Peru’s current armored vehicle fleet has been characterized by platforms such as the aging Soviet-era T-54/55 tanks, which have been in service for many years. With the new agreement, the deployment of K2 tanks in Latin America will be a significant step and will make a serious contribution to the modernization of the country’s land forces.
