The U.S. Redirects Patriot Systems Intended for Switzerland to Ukraine

The United States has decided to reroute some of the Patriot air defense systems originally destined for Switzerland to support Ukraine. According to a statement from the Swiss government, Washington formally informed them of this decision, shedding light on the urgency behind the U.S.’s intensified efforts to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses against relentless Russian missile and drone attacks.

Switzerland had placed an order for five Patriot systems from Raytheon in 2022, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2028. However, under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, such deliveries can be redirected to other allies in need. The Swiss announcement did not clarify how many systems would be affected or provide an updated delivery timeline.

This defense procurement was part of a broader Swiss strategy to enhance its air defense and aerial policing capabilities, which also included the purchase of 36 U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets. Last year, the U.S. had similarly informed Switzerland that a batch of PAC-3 MSE interceptors — the most advanced variant compatible with Patriot systems — would also be diverted to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Germany has stepped forward with an offer to purchase two Patriot systems directly from the U.S. to donate them to Ukraine. During his visit to Washington on July 14, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius noted that a single Patriot unit could cost around $1 billion, depending on the number of interceptors included. Pistorius emphasized that discussions with the U.S. government were ongoing and that any outstanding issues in the process were “solvable.”

At the LandEuro conference in Wiesbaden on July 17, U.S. Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, a senior NATO commander, announced plans to work with European nations to coordinate the delivery of Patriot and similar defense systems to Ukraine. Grynkewich stated that allies would collectively explore “what’s possible” to streamline the flow of newly produced equipment to Ukraine’s armed forces.

These developments signal a shift toward more agile and collaborative efforts among Western allies to reinforce Ukraine’s air defense capabilities in the face of continued aggression.
