Transall C-160: The Aircraft for Long-Range Missions

The Transall C-160 holds an important place among light tactical transport aircraft, developed through a collaboration between the French company Aérospatiale and the German firm MBB (Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm). Established in 1959, the consortium named “Transport Allianz” (Transall) was created by leading aerospace companies from Germany and France to develop a new transport aircraft to replace the Noratlas planes.

Development Process

Following joint efforts, three prototypes were produced, with the first prototype successfully completing its maiden flight on February 25, 1963. The design emphasized operational flexibility and durability, enabling versatile use during both wartime and peacetime.

Operators and Operational History

France: The French Air Force inducted 50 C-160F models between 1967 and 1972. Subsequently, from 1977 to 1981, it added 29 C-160NG (Nouvelle Génération – New Generation) aircraft equipped with aerial refueling capabilities to its fleet. Some NG models were equipped with electronic warfare systems (C-160G “Gabriel”) and the TACAMO system for submarine communications (C-160H). After modernization from 1994 to 1999, 58 aircraft remain in service today. Additionally, Air France purchased four C-160F aircraft from the French Air Force for postal transport and designated them as C-160P.

Germany: The German Air Force procured 110 C-160D aircraft between 1967 and 1972. Currently, 83 remain active.

Turkey: The Turkish Air Force acquired 20 C-160D aircraft from the German Air Force between 1971 and 1972, designating them as C-160T. During the 1974 Cyprus Operation, C-160s took off from Kayseri Erkilet Air Base and played a crucial role in parachuting troops. Today, a single C-160T remains in service, performing electronic warfare missions.

South Africa: The South African Air Force purchased nine C-160Z aircraft between 1967 and 1972, which have since been retired.

Thanks to its rugged construction, versatile use, and tactical flexibility, the Transall C-160 has been an indispensable asset for many air forces over the decades. Effective in transporting both personnel and cargo, the aircraft has extended its operational lifespan through modernization programs and continues to serve in limited numbers today.
