U.S. Air Force Orders Eight More MH-139A Grey Wolf Helicopters to Strengthen Nuclear Security Fleet

The U.S. Air Force has awarded Boeing a $173 million Lot 3 contract for eight additional MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters, raising the total number under contract to 34. The new aircraft will enhance security across intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) fields, provide convoy escort, and support rapid response missions as the program moves closer to initial operational capability.

Boeing confirmed on October 9 that the deal includes training and sustainment support, following a seven-aircraft order placed in April 2024. Eighteen helicopters have already been delivered as the Air Force wraps up its Initial Operational Test and Evaluation phase ahead of full field deployment.

The Grey Wolf is a militarized version of Leonardo’s proven AW139, assembled by Boeing for missions such as nuclear security, search and rescue, and troop transport. Designed to replace the aging UH-1N Huey fleet, the MH-139A delivers faster speed, extended range, and greater payload capacity—key factors in safeguarding America’s land-based nuclear deterrent.

“The MH-139A offers the speed, range, and payload capacity critical to U.S. national security missions,” said Azeem Khan, Boeing’s MH-139 program director. Leonardo emphasized the advantage of adapting a reliable civil platform for demanding military operations.

Powered by twin Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 engines, the helicopter features an armored cockpit and cabin, self-sealing fuel cells, missile warning and countermeasure systems, and provisions for M240 machine guns. With a three-hour endurance and a cruise speed near 135 knots, the Grey Wolf offers a major leap in performance and survivability, especially in harsh environments.

The latest order marks another milestone toward full-rate production and reflects the Air Force’s broader modernization strategy to strengthen nuclear command, control, and mobility. As Washington upgrades its missile force with the Sentinel ICBM, the Grey Wolf will play a crucial role in ensuring rapid, secure air response capabilities across the nation’s strategic deterrent network.
