U.S. Approves NASAMS Air Defense System Sale to Egypt

The U.S. Department of State has approved a potential $4.67 billion Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Egypt involving the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), according to an announcement by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on July 24, 2025. The proposal has been forwarded to the U.S. Congress for final review.

Under the request, Egypt seeks to acquire four AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar systems, 100 AMRAAM-Extended Range (ER) missiles, 100 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs, two spare AIM-120C-8 guidance sections, one spare control section, 600 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical missiles, 150 captive air training missiles (CATMs), 62 guidance units for tactical Sidewinders, and 20 guidance units for CATMs.

The package also includes fire distribution centers, canister launchers, electro-optical/infrared systems, encryption tools, various engineering and training services, logistical support, and other non-major defense equipment.

DSCA emphasized that the sale will enhance Egypt’s ability to counter current and emerging air threats by improving its detection and interception capabilities. Egypt does not currently operate NASAMS; its air defense inventory primarily consists of legacy Soviet and older U.S. systems.

RTX Corporation, operating out of Andover, Massachusetts, is set to be the primary contractor for the sale.
