U.S. Navy Prepares for the Future: DDG(X) Destroyer to Feature Next-Generation Weapons

The U.S. Navy is gearing up to redefine the concept of warships with the upcoming DDG(X) next-generation destroyer, planned for deployment within the next decade. According to the Congressional Research Service’s (CRS) July report, the Navy has requested $133.5 million in research and development funding for DDG(X) in the proposed fiscal year 2026 budget. The new design features a displacement of 14,500 tons—1,000 tons more than previously planned.

DDG(X) will be equipped with the Aegis Combat System, just like the Arleigh Burke and Ticonderoga-class ships it’s meant to replace. It will feature 96 vertical launch cells, 32 of which can be replaced with 12 larger missile launch cells. Thanks to its robust power system, the ship will be capable of deploying directed-energy weapons such as lasers and microwaves. It will also be optimized for quieter operation at sea.

Part of the Navy’s broader modernization strategy, DDG(X) is designed to reduce detection risk with minimized infrared, acoustic, and electromagnetic signatures. While the Navy continues to invest in smaller, unmanned vessels as part of its transition to autonomous systems, DDG(X) is poised to become the backbone of the fleet with its advanced technology and powerful strike capabilities.
