The U.S. Army has awarded AM General LLC an additional $126.5 million to produce a new batch of M1165A1B3 armored HMMWVs, reinforcing the service’s expeditionary mobility and tactical versatility. This order is part of a broader modernization strategy aimed at sustaining light vehicle capabilities across varied combat environments.
This modification, listed under contract P00023, increases the total contract value for the program to over $3.05 billion, marking it as one of the Army’s most substantial light tactical vehicle efforts to date. AM General continues to manufacture these vehicles at its South Bend, Indiana facility, with deliveries expected through August 2027.
The M1165A1B3 variant is designed for command and liaison roles, combining mobility with battlefield protection. It is powered by a 6.5-liter turbo diesel V8 delivering 190 horsepower, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle achieves a top speed of 113 km/h, features 43 cm of ground clearance, and can traverse water obstacles up to 1.52 meters with a dedicated fording kit.
Equipped with run-flat tires, it can continue moving for up to 48 kilometers after a puncture. The vehicle supports a payload of 1,012 kg and features an integrated 30,000 BTU air conditioning system, automatic fire suppression (AFES), and reinforced suspension.
The protection package includes undercarriage armor, side rocker panels, energy-absorbing seating, and a lower windshield deflector. The modular B3 armor kit offers full perimeter protection, roof armor, and a rear ballistic bulkhead. It’s compatible with “Frag” kits that add shielding to doors, wheel wells, and locks, allowing the platform to be tailored to specific threat levels.
Though the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) is gradually being phased into service, the HMMWV continues to fulfill essential missions such as reconnaissance, escort, mobile command, and logistics. Its proven reliability, modular design, and robust supply chain ensure its continued relevance.
The updated contract is managed by the Army Contracting Command at Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, and is funded through the Army’s FY2025 “Other Procurement” budget. With full funds already obligated, AM General can immediately begin production to meet upcoming fielding timelines.
