Italy’s Armored Power: Ariete Main Battle Tank Adapts to the Demands of Modern Warfare

A key component of Italy’s defense industry, the Ariete main battle tank stands out with its advanced firepower, modern protection systems, and high mobility. Developed through a collaboration between Iveco Fiat and Oto Melara, the Ariete has been actively serving in the Italian Army’s inventory since 1995.

Originally prototyped in 1985 and produced until 2002, more than 500 units of the tank were delivered. The chassis and support systems were developed by Iveco, while Oto Melara was responsible for the turret and fire control systems.

Modern Weaponry and Advanced Fire Control

Ariete’s primary weapon is a 120mm smoothbore tank gun manufactured by Oto Melara. This gun is compatible with high-penetration kinetic energy rounds and HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) munitions. The tank also carries a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a 7.62mm anti-aircraft machine gun.

Its digital fire control system, TURMS, was developed by Selex SAS (formerly Galileo Avionica). This system includes a panoramic day-night sight for the commander, a thermal camera and laser rangefinder for the gunner, and a digital fire control computer. The system automatically calculates optimal firing angles by analyzing meteorological data such as wind speed, humidity, and ambient temperature.

Advanced Protection: Composite Armor and NBC Defense

Protected by an advanced steel-composite armor system similar to those used on tanks like the Challenger 2 and M1 Abrams, Ariete is also equipped with an electronically controlled mortar system. This system can deploy smoke and chaff grenades to disrupt visual and radar targeting.

The crew is safeguarded by an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protection system developed by Aero Sekur, which ensures short-term survivability and operational continuity in the event of weapons of mass destruction.

Performance and Mobility

The Ariete is powered by a Fiat-built V-12 turbocharged diesel engine producing 1,270 horsepower. Paired with a 4-forward, 2-reverse automatic transmission developed by German firm ZF, the tank can reach speeds exceeding 65 km/h and has an operational range of 550 kilometers. It is capable of climbing gradients of up to 60% and can ford water depths of up to 1.25 meters. Its track system is produced by Germany’s Diehl Group.

A Tank Ready for the Future

In 2005, the Ariete was upgraded with modular armor integration and a new 55mm automatic loading system, enhancing its battlefield survivability and firepower. These upgrades ensure the tank remains aligned with the technological demands of modern combat.

With its powerful main gun, sophisticated protection systems, and robust engine performance, the Ariete continues to serve as one of the most vital components of Italy’s ground forces and a strong symbol of the nation’s strategic deterrence capability.
