MKE’s Indigenous Howitzer BORAN Proves Its Strength in Europe

The 105 mm light towed howitzer BORAN, developed entirely with domestic and national resources by Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE), successfully completed extensive live-fire trials in North Macedonia, where it was recently exported. The tests, conducted under real field conditions, earned BORAN high praise from its users for its accuracy and performance.

Under the agreement signed between MKE and the Ministry of Defense of North Macedonia, six BORAN howitzers and accompanying ammunition were delivered on June 6, 2025. Following its export to Bangladesh — the first overseas howitzer sale in the history of the Republic of Turkey — BORAN has now taken its place in Europe, successfully completing its field firing evaluations.

Lightweight Design and Rapid Deployment Capability

Developed to meet the requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces, BORAN stands out as one of the lightest howitzers in the world with a weight of 1,775 kilograms. Thanks to its design, it can be easily transported by Sikorsky S-70 and CH-47 Chinook helicopters or carried overland by load-capable vehicles to remote areas. BORAN can be made ready to fire in under one minute and can fire directly from its wheels, distinguishing it from competitors.

Rising International Interest, Especially in Europe

BORAN’s success in North Macedonia has drawn attention across Europe. MKE is reportedly conducting active export negotiations with several countries, and plans are underway to deliver BORAN to another European nation in the near future.

Reflecting Turkey’s growing capabilities in the defense industry, BORAN continues to enhance operational effectiveness for both the Turkish Armed Forces and allied nations.
