The European Union (EU) is preparing to deepen its cooperation with India in defense, technology, and trade. The European Commission unveiled a new strategy aimed at elevating bilateral relations to a higher level.
The strategy prioritizes increasing trade and investment. In particular, the ongoing free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations are planned to be completed by the end of the year. Additionally, efforts will focus on strengthening supply chains, promoting critical technologies, and enhancing digital collaboration. These steps aim to jointly strengthen the economic security of both parties.
Cooperation in defense and security will also be intensified. Joint initiatives will be expanded in strategic areas such as crisis management, maritime security, cyber defense, and counterterrorism. Strengthening production and technological capabilities, securing supply chains, and promoting innovation will be central to defense industry collaboration. Furthermore, discussions on hybrid threats, space security, and sanctions related to Russia will be intensified.
EU-India FTA negotiations originally began in 2007 but were suspended in 2013. In 2022, both sides decided to resume the trade talks.
