Germany Expands H145M Helicopter Fleet with 20 Additional Airbus Units

Germany is set to strengthen its defense capabilities and accelerate modernization efforts with the purchase of 20 additional H145M light attack and utility helicopters from Airbus. The new order will significantly expand the country’s existing H145M fleet, enhancing the operational effectiveness of both special forces and ground units.

In a statement by the German Ministry of Defense, it was emphasized that the H145M helicopters offer flexibility, low maintenance costs, and high maneuverability, making them suitable for a wide range of mission profiles. The helicopters will be deployed in attack, reconnaissance, and medevac (medical evacuation) operations.

Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even highlighted the strategic importance of the agreement for European security, saying, “The H145M platform has become the backbone of many allied European forces thanks to its versatility and operational reliability. Germany’s new order is a testament to our long-term partnership.”

Deliveries of the new helicopters are expected to begin in 2026, integrating seamlessly with the Bundeswehr’s existing H145M fleet. Some of the aircraft will reportedly be equipped with anti-armor missile systems and advanced electronic warfare suites.

This move is seen as part of Germany’s broader policy to increase defense spending and modernize its armed forces. The Berlin government has been ramping up air and ground modernization programs to strengthen its position within NATO and reinforce Europe’s security architecture.

With the addition of the new H145Ms, Germany’s tactical air support capabilities are expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
