German sensor specialist Hensoldt has entered into a strategic partnership with AVILUS, a domestic expert in unmanned aerial systems (UAVs). According to Hensoldt, the collaboration aims to jointly develop and market next-generation sensor and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) solutions based on proven technologies and agile production capabilities — all “Made in Germany.”
The cooperation will integrate Hensoldt’s cutting-edge sensor technologies—such as the high-performance electro-optical system, AMPS-M, and the PrecISR radar—with the “MissMarvin” mission operations system. The result will be scalable UAV platforms designed to meet both civilian and military demands.
With approval from the German Federal Aviation Authority for civilian flight operations and a “company owned, company operated” model, the partners say they are addressing a wide range of use cases. These include disaster relief, critical infrastructure monitoring, and national border security.
Hensoldt describes the partnership as part of its broader “Software Defined Defence” strategy, which focuses on innovative solutions through targeted collaborations. Initial demonstrations and pilot projects are already underway, with the shared goal of setting new national and international benchmarks for ISR capabilities in unmanned aviation.
Christina Canitz, Head of Optronics at Hensoldt, stated: “With AVILUS, we have an agile UAV partner that can fully leverage our advanced sensor technologies. Together, we are prioritizing technological sovereignty and short development-to-deployment cycles to build strong, resilient UAV capabilities in Germany.”
AVILUS aims to close critical capability gaps in medical evacuation, logistics, and reconnaissance with robust unmanned aircraft. The company emphasizes mission proximity, reliability, and rapid operational readiness.
Advanced Technology Highlights
Electro-Optical System
Hensoldt’s multispectral, AI-enabled electro-optical system delivers real-time detection, classification, and tracking. It combines HD thermal imaging, color/low-light, SWIR, and wide-angle cameras for comprehensive situational awareness. All sensors are available simultaneously and controlled via a high-precision four-axis gimbal.
AMPS-M Self-Protection System
AMPS-M integrates up to 16 smart countermeasure dispensers along with multiple warning sensors and protection mechanisms against missile, laser, and radar threats. The system is highly modular, low-maintenance, and backed by a global track record of 700+ active units with thousands of flight hours.
PrecISR X-Band Radar
PrecISR is a software-defined AESA X-band radar capable of detecting and tracking over 1,000 targets at long range, regardless of weather. The system is ITAR-free, scalable, and easily adaptable to a wide range of UAV platforms.
AVILUS UAV Portfolio
AVILUS is both a manufacturer and certified operator (EASA LUC) of a new class of unmanned aircraft with takeoff weights up to one ton. Its portfolio includes:
- Grille – A fully electric multicopter for evacuation missions with a range of up to 50 km.
- Wespe – A versatile rotary-wing UAV with a combustion engine for transporting supplies or injured personnel over distances of up to 300 km.
- Bussard – A fixed-wing aircraft with up to 2,500 km range, 14-hour endurance, and 150 kg payload capacity, designed for long-range strategic reconnaissance and deep-area missions.
