The German Ministry of Defense has signed a major military vehicle procurement agreement with Rheinmetall to strengthen the logistical capacity of the Bundeswehr. The order includes approximately 1,400 trucks and is valued at 770 million euros (around 891 million USD). Deliveries are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Order Details
According to Rheinmetall’s statement, the order includes 963 swap-body trucks capable of carrying containers and 425 unarmored utility vehicles (UTVs) in 4×4 and 8×8 configurations. Some of the vehicles will be equipped with armored cabins.
This delivery is part of a framework agreement signed in July 2024, which is the largest logistical vehicle contract in the company’s history. The agreement allows the Bundeswehr to purchase up to 6,500 vehicles worth a total of 3.5 billion euros over a seven-year period.
The Role of the HX Series
The new vehicles will be based on Rheinmetall’s HX series, which has been a core component of the Bundeswehr’s logistics infrastructure since 2017. To date, more than 7,000 HX vehicles have been delivered to the German military.
The newly introduced 3.5-ton 4×4 UTV model shares a high degree of parts commonality with the existing HX family, reducing maintenance costs and enhancing interoperability between vehicle types.
The HX series is designed to offer high mobility in challenging terrains and can be adapted for a wide range of logistics missions. These vehicles can perform tasks such as transporting ammunition, supplies, personnel, and heavy equipment.
Global Use
The HX platform is widely used not only in Germany but also by various NATO and allied nations including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, Singapore, Slovenia, Denmark, and Ukraine. According to the company, over 20,000 HX vehicles are currently in active service worldwide.
