Mk 47 Debuts at Milipol

Colt CZ showcased its fully acquired Mk 47 automatic grenade launcher at Milipol 2025, after taking complete ownership and associated intellectual property from General Dynamics on January 3, 2024. The system’s debut highlighted its programmable airburst capability, full compatibility with NATO high-velocity 40 mm ammunition, and multi-platform mounting options including tripods, vehicles, aircraft, and naval craft.

Role of AGL Systems

Unlike single-shot launchers such as the M79, automatic grenade launchers require a small crew due to the combined weight of the launcher, tripod, and ammunition. These systems fire high-explosive, fragmentation, shaped-charge, and less-lethal rounds for missions ranging from anti-vehicle engagements to riot control. Modern AGLs offer indirect fire at mortar-like ranges—such as the Mk 19’s 2,200 m capability—and many now include programmable sights and fuze-setting technology.

Development and Global Users

Originally designed by the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane and produced by General Dynamics, the Mk 47 received its first contract in 2006 for $23 million and another in 2009 for $12 million. Raytheon provided lightweight video sighting systems for Mod 0/1 versions, which served with U.S. Special Operations Command across Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Nearly 1,500 units are in U.S. service, while Israel and Australia have also procured significant quantities.

Technical Characteristics

Known as the Striker / Striker 40, the Mk 47 uses 40×53 mm high-velocity grenades and is built around a short-recoil mechanism. Key specifications include:

  • Weight: 18 kg
  • Length: 940 mm
  • Barrel: 610 mm
  • Closed-bolt firing
  • Left-side linked feed
  • No headspace or timing adjustments

The launcher features Picatinny rails for modular accessories and fires both impact and programmable airburst rounds out to 1,700 meters.

Fire Control Enhancements

A thermal imaging unit and video sight help operators maintain target visibility while adjusting elevation for long-range ballistic shots. The LVSII fire control system provides thermal and night imaging with an LCD overlay of aim point and target, enabling effective airburst programming. Accessories include the Mk 107 mount, Mk 108 tripod, vehicle adapter kits, and modular brackets for shields and laser units.

Multi-Platform Capability

Designed for flexibility, the Mk 47 can be adapted for infantry vehicles, dismounted tripod roles, naval vessels, and airborne platforms. Its compatibility with all NATO-standard high-velocity 40 mm ammunition strengthens Colt CZ’s links to European and international ammunition manufacturers, including swissAA.
