MSPO 2025: Hyundai HR-SHERPA Unmanned Ground Vehicle Achieves Combat-Ready Status

At MSPO 2025 in Kielce, Hyundai Rotem officially unveiled the production-ready configuration of its HR-SHERPA unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). This latest model marks a leap forward from the prototype displayed in 2024, which had served mainly as a technology demonstrator. The new version reflects refinements in engineering and system integration based on feedback from extensive prototype trials, making it fully operational for battlefield use.

The HR-SHERPA is a 6×6 electric-powered UGV equipped with independent in-wheel motors, puncture-proof airless tires, and a remote-controlled weapon station. Designed for multi-role missions, it supports reconnaissance, logistics, casualty evacuation, CBRN detection, and fire support operations. The production variant incorporates an enhanced sensor suite, improved command-and-control links, and full autonomous navigation to perform reliably even in GPS-denied environments.

Its electric drive system allows near-silent movement, reduces thermal signature, and supports “silent watch” missions. The variant showcased at MSPO featured a remote weapon station armed with a 7.62 mm machine gun, suitable for perimeter security and escort duties.

Displaying HR-SHERPA in Poland highlights Hyundai Rotem’s intent to expand into Europe’s growing unmanned systems market. The company already supplies K2 main battle tanks and the localized K2PL variant to the Polish Armed Forces, making HR-SHERPA a natural extension of this partnership.

South Korea’s defense export strategy increasingly focuses on manned-unmanned teaming, and HR-SHERPA demonstrates concrete progress in that area. With NATO allies seeking cost-effective ways to reduce risk to troops and maintain operational tempo, this UGV offers a versatile and scalable solution for modern ground warfare.
