U.S. Marines Train in Puerto Rico to Counter Caribbean Criminal Networks

Since August 31, 2025, U.S. Marines and Sailors have been conducting large-scale joint exercises in southern Puerto Rico aimed at bolstering regional security and disrupting transnational criminal networks across the Caribbean. The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) confirmed on September 25 that it has been executing amphibious landings, aviation drills, and live-fire exercises in coordination with the Puerto Rican National Guard.

The training is supported by the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) and its Amphibious Ready Group, providing a fully integrated force capable of rapid power projection, maritime interdiction, and crisis response. Operations are concentrated around Camp Santiago, taking advantage of Puerto Rico’s rugged terrain and tropical climate to replicate real-world scenarios along narcotics trafficking corridors.

AH-1Y Cobra and UH-1Y Huey helicopters from Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 have supported the drills with close air support, troop transport, and reconnaissance missions, demonstrating the MEU’s ability to conduct deep inland operations and vertical assault missions crucial for denying cartel logistics routes.

This deployment is part of U.S. Southern Command’s broader strategy to counter drug, weapons, and human trafficking networks exploiting maritime access points to Central America and the U.S. mainland. The 22nd MEU’s rapid mobility offers a scalable enforcement capability without requiring permanent bases in the region.

In addition to kinetic training, the operation includes combined exercises with the Puerto Rican National Guard to boost local readiness and improve disaster response capacity. According to the Department of Defense, all activities are being coordinated with local authorities to ensure transparency and minimize disruption to civilian life.

By maintaining a visible presence in Puerto Rico and the surrounding waters, the U.S. sends a clear message that it is prepared to secure maritime routes, deter criminal organizations, and protect U.S. citizens and interests throughout the Caribbean.
